Masjid Al-Marama

Lusail City, QATAR

Masjid Al Marama is envisioned as a contemporary spiritual landmark for Lusail City, emerging from the desert as a place of gathering, reflection, and unity. Set within a 50-kanal site in one of Qatar’s newest urban districts, the mosque is conceived not only as a religious institution, but as a civic space that welcomes a diverse, international community while remaining rooted in Islamic tradition.

Designing for Lusail required navigating the extremes of climate, scale, and context. The challenge lay in creating an architectural language that feels unmistakably contemporary, yet carries the cultural depth and symbolism intrinsic to Islamic architecture in Qatar and the wider Middle East. Rather than replicating historical forms, the design reinterprets them through geometry, light, and spatial experience.

The plan unfolds as four crescent forms, each representing one of the four caliphs, curving inward toward a shared center: a gesture of unity under a single faith. Rising from this convergence, the star-shaped minaret references Islamic cosmology, becoming both a spiritual marker and an urban beacon. Contemporary materials and metal jaalis reinterpret traditional mashrabiya patterns, providing shade, permeability, and climatic comfort, while the landscape masterplan merges classical Islamic geometry with fluid, contemporary curves to shape movement and gathering.

The result is a mosque that speaks to both past and present: an inclusive, welcoming space that transforms symbolism into built form, and establishes Masjid Al Marama as a timeless yet forward-looking presence within Lusail City.
